Bachmann is not the only candidate in the Republican field whose message on gay and lesbian issues has recently undergone a makeover. Like Bachmann, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney spent the early part of the last decade spearheading efforts to get a state constitutional amendment opposing same-sex marriage. When his state's highest court ruled in 2004 that residents were entitled on the same rights to marriage, Romney did everything he could to counteract that right from becoming extended to nonresident same-sex adults, who were not permitted to marry inside Bay State until 2008, after Romney left workplace.

Since then, however, Romney has tried to portray himself for a backer of some gay rights, particularly those related to employment and other financial matters, even as he continues to oppose gay marriage. His evasive maneuvers have drawn criticism from both far right and that far left, while helping him establish his niche for the reason that go-to moderate Republican.

At first glance, both candidates' shifts apparently signal that their statements are more the products with strategy than of personal beliefs all along. Lawrence Jacobs, a political scientist in the University of Minnesota, told The brand new York Times that Bachmann's "recipe" is always to "find the issue, then do it politically to mobilize previously marginalized or disconnected people. " As a condition senator, that meant concentrating on disenfranchised social conservatives. Today, through the Tea Gathering, Bachmann has found another group of supporters who are much more energized by fiscal factors than social ones. While some of these fiscal conservatives are also social conservatives, not all are.

With Florida Gov. Rick Perry's entry into the race, Bachmann likely lost a large share of her evangelical supporters, leaving her to concern Romney on economic factors. To do that, she needs to keep her base with fiscally conservative supporters intact, even if that means dropping most of the social issues she relied on earlier in the woman's career.

Considering Bachmann and Romney are generally politicians, it is not unreasonable for individuals to assume that their stances change to accomodate their current political needs. That may be a fact, but it also can be done that Bachmann's comments on "Meet the Press" together with Romney's softer tone on gay rights are certainly not only about strategy. They will often, in fact, be adjusting their minds.
